ATTENTION

ALL P.S. 193 SCIENTISTS!

This year we will continue our Science Research Projects with a focus on investigative research, writing and technology.

We will continue with a research-based project, which will address our school wide focus on informative writing. Students will engage in research and write a    RESEARCH REPORT

This is not an inquiry based science project with experiments.

(Note: however, students may independently do experiments at home related to their research topic and report on their findings within their research reports.)

All grade 2-5 students will engage in research.

Dear Readers,

In spite of proofreading this numerous times, I might have missed errors.

Please let me know if you have any trouble  due to my inadvertant errors.

Yours, Ms. McGinty

3 Required Parts

This year we are improving the project assignment so that it better aligns with the New York State Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).

Students will need to focus their research on one question regarding their chosen.

Once the student has chosen a topic, she/he should then decide what to focus on about that topic.

(Why did we add this requirement?: The NGSS requires that students apply their knowledge to a real world issues or problems at higher levels than has been required in the past.)

For example, Last year in one class, three separate students chose the topic "hurricanes."  Since the topic, "hurricanes"  was quite general, the three reports were almost identical.  The presentations were likewise very similar.  The audience (classmates) listened to the same presentation 3 times.

We would like our students to be 21st century learners:

  • creative and innovative

  • able to collaborate

  • able to communicate effectively

  • able to think critically

This will enable them to be better prepared to thrive in school and in today's global community.

Therefore we are requiring that students narrow the topic to a specific detail.

For example:

Instead of just "hurricanes"

  • How do scientists predict the intensity and location of hurricanes?

  • How do hurricanes affect coastal areas compared to inland areas?

  • How do hurricanes impact ecosystems?"

  • How will an oil spill in the ocean be affected by a hurricane?

  • Does El Nino factors influence hurricanes?

  • How does the ocean respond to hurricanes and how does this affect the land?

  • etc.

Please see the page about questions for more information.
